We’re recruiting a team of 7 community members from throughout Coshocton County, ages 14-80, to work with comics/graphic artist Julian Dassai on the design of a large public art piece titled “Little Social Histories.”

With Julian as mentor, the 7member artmaking team will create graphics telling little social histories of downtown Coshocton in the context of the old and now vacant Selby Building (400 block Main Street). The finished artwork will be combined with historic text, old photographs and images, and will be enlarged to fill the building’s storefront windows.

The 31 empty windows are currently a major detractor on Main Street. So in addition to having an opportunity to learn from Julian, the team will be doing the community a service.

This opportunity requires a commitment of one full weekend–Friday evening, all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon–February 20-22 + approximately five flex hours per week through March. Julian Dassai is a comics/graphic artist in Columbus Ohio. Julian writes a monthly cartoon page called the COLUMBUSONIAN for (614) Magazine and is currently working as a lead artist on the production of The Weinland Park Story Book.  This graphic anthology is a collaborative project between the Wexner Center for the Arts and the people (including youth) who live and work in Weinland Park, a University District neighborhood in transition. Not clever and cool enough? Julian holds a finance degree from The Ohio State University and plays lead guitar for Nick Tolford & Company.

 Little Social Histories is funded in part by a National Endowment for the Arts OurTown grant. The OurTown grants program supports creative placemaking projects that help transform communities into lively, beautiful, and sustainable places with the arts at their core.
