“Love?  What’s love got to do, got to do with it?”

–We’ve all been there, but where was “there” and how did WE feel?   No matter how we’ve felt, someone, someplace, at some time, has felt the same.  And there is a song or sonnet to prove just that.  On Friday, Feb. 12, Angie Porteus and I are going to share some of our personal favorites that cover those feelings we call love and the many other feelings that result from “this thing called love.”

Much has been written about the “stages of love”, and while I once attempted to divide our selections into various stages, I concluded that the stages, like most things in life, ebb and flow.   And so it will be with our program for Friday evening.  From those first heated moments of initial desire to the rapture of romance to the later stages of….well, let’s just say we’ve got a little of everything related to love.  We hope you enjoy our program.  See you at the Pomerene this Friday for the Valentine’s Day Rent Party.  And if for some reason you can’t make it, Happy Valentine’s Day!"  Jon Cotterman

WHAT IS A RENT PARTY?

At the time of the Great Migration north, blacks emigrating from the south settled the problem of Harlem’s inflated rents by throwing parties.  Furniture was moved to the outside walls, musicians and refreshments were brought in, card tables were setup out of the way of the dance floor, and the doors were opened in exchange for a few bucks.

In an effort to relieve stress on our monthly budget, the Pomerene Center has adopted/adapted the Rent Party to help meet our monthly gas bill.  YES! We open our doors at 7:30p on First (with some exceptions) Friday evenings, October-April and present great acoustic music– great times (especially if you bring your friends!) –and great food $3 per plate. We'll have coffee but feel free to bring your own beverage. Suggested donation $5 at the door.
